Materials-
1 skein Caron Simply Soft in a pastel 16
inch circular needles sizes 7; double pointed needles size 7. Or sizes
required for gauge. Size G Crochet Hook, stitch markers, blunt darning needle, contrast scrap yarn to use as stitch holder, needle
and coordinating thread. Gauge- In stockinette stitch 16 sts or 20 rows equal 4 inches. Fits
a newborn Beginning
at the top of the hood with the 16
inch needle cast on 62 sts. Row 1-6 knit (3 ridges of garter stitch) Row
7 knit Row
8 purl Repeat
these 2 rows until work measures 6 ins., ending after working a purl row. Next
row- k 25 sts, k 10 sts, SSK Turn
the work- k10 sts, SSK Repeat
the last row (like turning a heel, with the “heel flap” in garter stitch)
until there are 20 sts on the needle. Then
Turn the work, work in garter stitch until 3 sts before the gap, k2tog, SSK. Repeat
this row until you have 4 sts left on the needle. Cut yarn & place on
holder. Collar- With wrong side facing and using the crochet hook and pick up 56 stitches around the base of the hood, including the 4 you have left on the needle. (26 sts, 4 sts, 26 sts) Turn
and knit two rows (1 ridge) ending on right side. Eyelet
row: k2, *yo, k2tog* repeat *
ending k2 K2
rows (1 ridge) Yoke- You
are on the wrong side. Row
1- k 4, p 6 sts, place a marker, p
10 sts, place a marker, p16 sts, place a marker, p 10 ) sts, place a marker, p
6, k 4. Row
2- knit to within 1 stitch of first
marker, k into the front and back of the st (inc made), slip marker, inc, *k
to within 1 st of next marker, inc, slip marker, inc*, rep at each marker,
knit to end of row. You
should have increased 8 times in this row. Row
3- K 4, purl to 4 sts before end of
row, k 4 Continue
to work rows 2 and 3 until the stitch counts between each marker are: 23
front, 36 sleeve, 42 back, 36 sleeve, 23 front. Divide
for sleeves- (remove all markers this row) Knit
to first marker, remove it, k 1. Now using a blunt darning needle and scrap
yarn, slip 34 sts for the sleeve on to the length of yarn to hold. Cast on 8
sts and knit across stitches for the back. (next marker), k 1, slip 34 for
sleeve on to a length of yarn. Cast on 8 sts, knit to end of row. Work
in Stockinette st, keeping the first and last 4 stitches in garter stitch,
until work measures 8 ins, measured from the top of the shoulder, ending with
a right side row. Knit
8 rows (4 ridges of garter stitch), Use crochet hook to bind off. Sleeves- Slip
the sleeve sts off their length of yarn onto 2 of the double point needles.
Using a third double point needle with right side of work facing you, join
yarn to right edge of armhole and pick up 10 sts across the underside of
armhole, You have 44 stitches. Making
the center of the underarm your starting point, arrange the stitches on your
double point needles with 12 on your first needle, 14 on your second needle,
and 18 on the third. Now you
always know where you beginning is without using a marker. K
6 rounds. Decrease
round- k 1, ssk, k to within 2 sts of beginning, k 2 tog. K 6 rounds, then do
another decrease round as above. Continue
to work as established, decreasing every 6 rounds, until sleeve measures 6 ˝
ins from the armhole. Purl
one round. knit one round (garter stitch ridge) Make 3 ridges, then bind off
using crochet hook. Twisted
cord - Cut
4 strands of yarn 3 times the desired finished length. Knot them together at
each end. Place 1 end over a doorknob and slip a pencil through the other end.
Begin twisting clockwise until the strands are so well twisted that they begin
to twist back on themselves. Keeping the twisted strands taut, fold the cord
in half. Remove the pencil and allow the cord to twist back on itself. Remove
the end from the doorknob and knot it. After
you thread the tie through the eyelets use a needle and thread to sew the tie
at the edge of the sweater so it will not over tighten.
Cut the ends to make a fringe. Abbreviations: k
= knit p
= purl st
= stitch sts
= stitches ssk
= slip next two stitches onto your needle then knit together (decrease) k2tog
= knit 2 stitches together (decrease) inc
= increase (knit into the front and back of the next stitch. Feel
